HOLLIDAYSBURG, Pa. − Luigi Mangione, accused of fatally shooting UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a busy Manhattan street, arrived in New York on Thursday after agreeing to be extradited from Pennsylvania to face murder and other charges in state and federal court.
Mangione, 26, who appeared in court here early Thursday clean-shaven and wearing an orange jumpsuit, said few words in brief hearings. The prep school valedictorian and Ivy League graduate was whisked away by New York police officers immediately after the court proceedings.
Mangione is charged in New York state court with one count of first-degree murder in furtherance of terrorism, two counts of second-degree murder, including a count of murder in the second degree as an act of terrorism, and several weapons charges, according to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's Office.
Mangione, who was arrested in nearby Altoona on Dec. 9 after a massive, five-day manhunt, would face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole if convicted on all the state counts in New York.
Federal prosecutors in Manhattan are charging Luigi Mangione, 26, with the federal crime of murder using a firearm, two charges of stalking and an additional firearms offense, according to a criminal complaint. Prosecutors say that Mangione "traveled in interstate commerce" by taking a bus from Atlanta to New York before Thompson's killing, and so have jurisdiction.
